Giving Engineers Time to Design Better
In today’s fast-paced engineering world, automation isn’t just a luxury — it’s a necessity. Custom add-ins for Autodesk software like AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit are becoming increasingly common tools that speed up repetitive tasks, reduce human error, and help teams deliver projects faster.
But what happens when we speed up the process... and don’t use that time wisely?
Let’s talk about the right way to use add-ins, and what can go wrong when we don’t.

The True Value of Time Saved
When we automate a manual task, say, generating drawings, filling in repetitive data, or renaming hundreds of elements — the immediate benefit is clear: we save time.
But the real value lies not in saving time for the sake of it, but in what we choose to do with it.
That extra time should be given back to engineers — so they can:
Explore alternative design solutions
Optimize for easier on-site assembly
Minimize the time and cost of renting heavy equipment
Improve collaboration with other disciplines
Identify and resolve risks earlier in the process
In other words, use the time to design better, smarter, and more efficiently.
A Real-World Example: When Time Was Misused
We recently worked with a company that implemented custom automation tools to streamline their detailing process. Tasks that once took two full days were reduced to just a few clicks. It was a success—at least on paper.
But instead of reinvesting the time saved into improving design quality, management let go of two team members, assuming the remaining staff could “handle it” with the help of automation.
Here’s what happened next:
Engineers had the same workload as before, just with fewer teammates.
The quality of output remained unchanged — no time to refine, rethink, or optimize.
The remaining team felt overworked and anxious about job security.
Eventually, engineers started resisting the tools, even sabotaging automation.
The company gained no long-term benefit from the add-ins. What could have been a leap forward became just another stressor in the system.
The Right Way: Think Bigger Than Payroll
Add-ins and automation aren’t about shrinking teams, they’re about amplifying them.
A better use of reclaimed time could lead to:
A design that cuts assembly time by 20%
A project that reduce the time a crane is needed on the site for 3 days
An innovation that avoids a costly mistake in the field
A team that finally has time to breathe, review, and improve
These are the kinds of savings that don’t just trim costs—they grow your reputation, win new projects, and build a stronger, happier team.
Final Thoughts
Automation is powerful, but it’s only as good as the leadership that decides what to do with the time it frees up. Give engineers the breathing room to do their best work. Trust them to use that time wisely. Encourage innovation and reward refinement. Because the smartest investment isn’t in fewer people. It’s in better design.
